Mozy Home Review: The Good and the Not-so-Good about Mozy Home Online Backup ServiceApril 24, 2009 on 9:56 pm | In Mozy talk | No CommentsMozy Home is one of the two services offered by Mozy for online backup. The other is Mozy Pro which is intended for business use. As the name implies, this service is intended for personal and home use. Compared to other online storage services, Mozy Home is one of the more affordable online backup solutions for the home. This review will provide an overview of the service and will help you determine if it’s a good value for the money or not. For less than $5 per month, here’s a summary of what you get: Unlimited storage; Software that is easy to install and use; Automatic or scheduled backup on either the PC or Mac; Multi-layer security for both the transmission process and the file storage; Backup process that works quietly in the background without slowing down your computer; Remote access to files What’s Good and Not-so-Good One great thing about Mozy Home is that there is a free version for those who only have a small amount of data to backup. The free version allows you to backup up to 2GB of data. If you need more space than that, then you’ll need to upgrade to the unlimited plan. Don’t worry, though, because the plan is less than $5 per month and you get unlimited backup storage space! Getting started with Mozy Home for first-time users is not a problem at all as the setup process is simple and the interface is user-friendly. But don’t be surprised if the initial backup takes days to finish if you have a really large volume of data to back up. The same is true with other online storage and backup services due to the constraints of the upload speeds of Internet connections. Once the initial backup is completed, you can set it to do automatic backups or scheduled backups. From that point forward, Mozy Home works seamlessly in the background without hogging so much of your computer’s resources. The service also gets points when it comes to the security of your files as they are encrypted before leaving your computer and are then uploaded via a secured Internet connection and then stored in their encrypted state on Mozy’s secure servers. When it comes to restoring your files, Mozy gives you three options on how you want your files restored: desktop, web, and DVD restore. Having multiple options to restore your data is good but some users have reported that the restore process can take a while. In some cases, it can take Mozy a good 24 hours just to prepare your data for restoration if you have a large set of data to restore, and that doesn’t include the time it takes to actually download the files or have them sent to you via the DVDs if you choose that option. For smaller files, you can do a quick and easy desktop restore, where you simply use the restore interface found in your Mozy Home desktop software interface. For larger files however, Mozy recommends you use web restore where you make a restore request directly to Mozy. While the request itself can be done easily, downloading the zip files can take some time, and for those unfamiliar with zip files, sorting through these can be pretty daunting. If either option doesn’t work for you, you can also use the DVD restore alternative and have your files sent to you on DVD for a fee of about $60. Mozy Home also doesn’t fare as well when it comes to customer support, according to some users. For starters, there is no telephone support. You can only contact Mozy via live chat or by email. The other issue is that some users have commented that Mozy can be slow to respond to queries and that the information provided isn’t always thorough. However, many users report that Mozy’s support is responsive and excellent at providing information. Mozy Home Review Summary Just like any other online backup service, Mozy Home has its pros and cons. It isn’t perfect but then again no service is. Overall, Mozy Home is an excellent value. To get unlimited backup for less than $5 per month is cheap “insurance” and a great way to protect your important files and data. View original review here. Backup Geneology FindingApril 18, 2009 on 9:09 pm | In Mozy talk | No CommentsI back up all my genealogical databases to Mozy for free. I’ve also placed family trees on Rootsweb so if my computer ever died or my workbooks were destroyed, I could still obtain copies of my databases from either site. I’ve also given printed genealogies to relatives in other states over the years and could, if needed, obtain photocopies of those. I cringe to think of what it would take to recover my data if I didn’t have it backed up away from my home. 25 Resources to Simplify Your Life as a BloggerApril 9, 2009 on 8:36 pm | In Mozy talk | No CommentsI have been using Mozy for about a year now to backup my hard drive. It’s one of those services that I hope I never have to use, but if I do need it, it will be well worth the money. Mozy will automatically backup your hard drive at specific intervals so you don’t even have to remember to do it. You can get unlimited backups for less than $5 per month, and a personal account with 2 GB or less for free. Mozy 2GB FreeApril 3, 2009 on 12:52 pm | In Mozy talk | No CommentsI use Mozy backup, they give you 2gb free and you can purchase more. Out of all the backup solutions I have used over the years this is the easiest and cleanest program I have ever had the pleasure of using. The recover is awesome as well. Give it a whirl. Offsite Backup (Data Loss is a hard and costly lesson)Set it and forget it with Mozy, offsite backup 2GB Totally Free Online Backup! Compliments of Mozy Mozy HomeApril 3, 2009 on 12:50 pm | In Mozy talk | No CommentsI’ve been using Mozy ( now owned by EMC) for the last couple of months for my home PC, and I’m pretty impressed. The initial backup takes a while, (14 hours for me) due to the slow uploads that are typical of residential cable internet, but my daily backups tend to take less than a minute, since the software is smart enough to back files up at the block level, rather than the file level. With a little Googling for coupons, it wound up costing me about $40 for a year of unlimited backup service, which seems reasonable to get all my files, photos, and tax records automatically out of the house daily to save me from disaster. Mozy and RestoreApril 2, 2009 on 10:59 am | In Mozy talk | No CommentsThe good news (and really the only good news of the day) is that Mozy is happily restoring my data at pretty reasonable speeds: peaking at over 2.0 MB/s over my ISP connection, and averaging somewhere around 1.0 MB/s. And it was ridiculously easy to browse the data that I wanted to restore, pick a destination, and just restore. I was at about 35 GB restored when I left for work this morning, with no hiccups, burps, or other forms of nastiness from Mozy. It is just working, and working well. Which is really the whole point. Mozy, not just for backup, but restore too! Mozy is terrificApril 2, 2009 on 10:56 am | In Mozy talk | No CommentsForget the wisdom that if something seems too good to be true it isn’t. Also forget there is no free lunch advice. For several years I have used the Mozy computer backup system. It has cost absolutely nothing and works reliably. Like so many others I had the terrible experience of losing a hard drive through no fault of my own. Anger and frustration dealing with lost files drove me to look for foolproof ways to regularly backup everything on my computer. Luckily, I discovered Mozy. Thank God for Mozy.com.April 2, 2009 on 10:52 am | In Mozy talk | No CommentsJust wanted to let you guys know that I have been crazy sick since I came back from LA and then my hard drive went down. My files have been backed up, which I am very glad about that. Tech support guy/Mr. Maven is getting all together for me. Thank God for Mozy.com. If you do not back-up your computer files, start today! |
