MormonTechie.comJanuary 24, 2009 on 3:13 am | In Mozy talk | No CommentsLet me start this post off with a little story. I started working in IT about 5 years ago. One of the downfalls of working with technology is that sometimes you think you can fix anything. Well… I knew I should be backing up my family pictures and made some paltry CD backups, but never really took it seriously. I told myself “I am a techie and can fix anything.” Well… let me just tell you that there are some things I can’t fix. And hard drives DO FAIL! Since my unfortunate hard drive failure and the resulting loss of pictures and data I have researched dozens of back-up options. I now have a complex techie solution I use for my pictures, videos and documents that involves a script and automated backups to my own personal off site server where it duplicated the data once more on a Raid network device. But that is obviously not for everyone. That being said I have long looked for a good solution that I could recommend to others. I finally found it. It is the mozy.com folks. And as an added bonus, they are based out of Pleasant Grove UT and I think they have Mormon connections. I personally love supporting my brothers and sisters and gospel in their business efforts. Geekzone.co.nzJanuary 24, 2009 on 3:00 am | In Mozy talk | No CommentsMozy backup is not expensive at all at US$4.95 a month. It’s much cheaper than you losing all your digital content. I have a Windows Home Server with 2.5TB where I store videos, photos, copies of documents folders and full image backups. I have a Mozy account for my laptop with about 90GB uploaded. I also use Mozy Pro for my servers with about 20GB uploaded. Backup is ok, but if someone steals your Drobo or Windows Home Server box at the same time as they take your laptop, or if the house burns down while you are out for dinner then there’s nothing but an off site backup that will help you. Mozy Lifestyle (Day-to-day with Remote Backup)January 16, 2009 on 12:34 pm | In Mozy talk | No CommentsFinal thought for this evening: One of my friends told me that Mozy.com is great for his mother in law, I am just pushing the envelope, so to speak, because I have many files, and big files. I simply don’t agree that my backup sets are unreasonable on my Mac or desktop, but a lot of my friends are adopting the service for themselves and their family, and my experience for the everyday computers in my household also has been without a hitch so far. I’m glad I’m using Mozy. It’s still not a setup-and-forget technology. Iyyar Et tuJanuary 16, 2009 on 12:30 pm | In Mozy talk | No CommentsI found 2 very neat Online file storage sites today and was thrilled. I backed up whatever was on this PC to www.mozy.com. It has 2GB free file storage and it is pretty much an automatic exercise in file back up. There is a paid option of $ 4.95 a month that gives unlimited file storage. You can check it out at www.mozy.com. Joes BlogJanuary 16, 2009 on 12:27 pm | In Mozy talk | No CommentsI then signed up for a free 2GB Mozy account on both machines and worked surprisingly smoother than Carbonite. It also has a better interface and is way more robust than Carbonite. It works so well I decided to upgrade my accounts for just $4.95/month on a month to month basis for unlimited amount of back-up space. Yup I did say UNLIMITED. It is working seamlessly on both machines but I do advise for the notebook users take it slow until you have everything backed up. What I mean is that you can choose which files to back up by priority. I don’t recommend selecting all files to back up like once on a notebook. On a stationary desktop that is on all the time go for it. Its great. In conclusion Mozy wins with its functional, simple and functional online back-up application. If you cant afford it at the moment, I highly recommend signing up for free and get 2GB of back-up space. Let me know if any of you have any questions suggestions or feedback. iPods for You!January 9, 2009 on 9:21 pm | In Mozy talk | No CommentsMozy Up Close Mozy if considered the best as it sets schedules for backing up and limits network usage when you want to use the Internet aside from simply backing up files. So data back up does not hold up your Internet usage. While we’re on the subject of putting things on pause, Mozy can backup files that are being used, so you don’t have to turn off program x just to back it up.Exiting the program just to back up the files is time consuming, and anyone who used other programs can say so. To have better understanding of how the system works, see this Mozy backup review and get details on performance, features and costs. See also how Mozy can handle your files automatically once you have initially backed up your files and have set the subsequent back up schedules. If your files get infected or corrupted, you can copy from Mozy’s several back up versions to replace them. That is probably Mozy’s next best feature. Mozy Online BackupsJanuary 9, 2009 on 9:18 pm | In Mozy talk | No CommentsI’ve always been careful about making backups and I was just recently talking to a friend about how our memories, records and purchases are now in digital format: photos, music, home videos, movies, tax records, accounting records, etc. I believe that a good backup strategy is essential and, in addition to making local and off-site hard disk and DVD-based backups I’ve been happily using Mozy to make online backups. I get to manage my own encryption key and I’ve been a happy customer for more than 2 years. I started with the Free Mozy just to try it out and now I have almost 500GB backed-up. Once in a while I’ll try some restores just to make sure it’s working and I’ve never had a problem. Backing up 500GB can be pretty slow but they don’t seem to throttle my backups and with my Comcast internet I seem to get about 1 Mbs up which is pretty good! I highly recommend them. I’m giving a try to online/offsite backupsJanuary 9, 2009 on 9:10 pm | In Mozy talk | No CommentsWhen my sister’s Macbook harddrive crashed a year ago, we learned the leason. Backups are vital! So, we bought an external harddrive and upgraded to Mac OSX Leopard, that has Timemachine built-in (an in-site backup solution from Apple). Timemachine is cool, but what happens if my backup drive crashes too? Now, I want to try-out an off-site solution. Now Im giving it a try to Mozy. Mozy has a free account type that lets you use 2GB for backups. Its cool since it runs on my Mac and I configured it to backup every night. Since I “only” have 2GB of online storage, I’m using it just for my personal pictures (got 1.6 GB already only in pictures from 2007 and 2008!). It runs unattended each night and it feels nice having my data on a server (or servers) somewhere in the world. If my Mac’s harddrive crashes some day, I’ll have my backup Harddrive, and if that crashes too (hey, disasters happen!), I can have my Mozy backup ready for restoring. The unlimited space account is just $5 per month, and I think that’s a good deal. Backup Your Photos Online – Unlimited BackupJanuary 9, 2009 on 9:04 pm | In Mozy talk | No CommentsHowever, Mozy was the solution I chose, because they offer unlimited space for only $4.95 per month, and also several reviews has established that Mozy is also a very secure solution. I now have all my photos and files backed up in my online storage space with Mozy, and I am just glad that my files are now secure and backed up without having to go through the hazzle of burning dvd’s or worrying about how large my external harddrive should be. Free online backup, anyone?January 9, 2009 on 9:01 pm | In Mozy talk | No CommentsThanks kevleviathan; you’re the second person today to recommend Mozy. Mozy it is! |
