One thing that ultimately made me decide to go with Mozy was the fact that they will give anyone (yes, even you) 2 GB of free backup space with their service. You can create an account and test drive their service to get a good feel for what  you can expect from the premium service experience. For my trial period, I searched hard for a folder of images that kept my quota under 2 GB – which was somewhat challenging. I believe the folder I pointed it to contained only around 240 RAW images from my D200. Mozy’s free account was clearly not enough disk space for me and my files.  ;)

I don’t do ads on this blog, but I have to say that mozy.com did what it promised. It backed up my files and emailed them to me within a few hours of my request. And it’s free for the first 2 GB. I love you Mozy.

One of the nice things about Mozy is that it can be set up to automatically back up your files. I was able to quickly backup my files, without much of a noticeable slowdown to my computer. There is an option to choose quicker backup speed or quicker computer. If you backup while away from your computer, this isn’t even an issue.

Bottom line: Mozy is a reasonable storage option for anyone who wants to be able to backup their computer without having to remember to do it.

An educated guess (Timur Fanshteyn)

Before rebuilding the machine, I’ve spent a few hours backing up data from my desktop to DVDs. However, after reinstallation, I found out that I missed to backup my music collect. I don’t have that much, only 8 gigs or so, but it is still not something that I would want to miss. So here’s were Mozy comes in. I subscribe to Mozy’s online backup solution (www.mozy.com) For 4.95 a month, it provides a complete “Set it and Forget it” backup solution. After my machine was back up and running. I logged into the Mozy website. Selected “Restore using Web”, and chose my music folder. In about an hour, Mozy sent me an email notifying my that my restore files was ready. The email contained 3 links to file downloads: 3, 3, and 2GB files. About 1 hour for download, simple extract to the c:\ and I am back having my full music collection restored.

okay…that’s cheesy, but it’s the best i can do this morning…besides, you can’t really mozy on down to mozy…it’s a virtual on-line storage company (www.mozy.com)…i found an article about them in newsweek about how they offer 2 GB of free storage…

reading the article, it dawned on me that would be enough space to back-up all the important things in my life, like the pics that have been downloaded from my camera, but not yet forwarded to snapfish…and my file of recipes (which only exists in softcopy)…and i really liked that i could set it up to automatically do the back-up around my schedule…

how easy is that? i mean, for something free??

You all know that I am a huge fan of backing up your genealogy files – and luckily, I’ve been able to keep it all to a f2GB thumb drive (I use 2 different thumb drives – one for my genealogy and pictures and one for all of my school stuff).

When I still worked at Intergen, Trey put me onto Mozy. It’s an insanely-great online backup tool. It works on a PC or a Mac, it works in the background with minimal fuss, keeps the different versions of your files, is very lightweight, and has a very generous free account.

I love it. It has saved my bacon while I’ve been working on Ponoko more than a couple of times.

Today, as a Mozy user, I received their May newsletter (don’t think we’ve seen one at all before…). A big part of my role at Ponoko is email marketing so I pay a lot of attention to what others are doing.
